THE ARTIST MOTHER IS NOT DEAD
“In 2020 I participated in an Art Fair in Amsterdam. I was talking with one of the coaches, a well-respected art director / gallery owner, about my work. At one point she looked at me and asked: ‘Is your sweater that big or are you pregnant?’. I answered that I was pregnant. She nodded and walked away.”
“In 2021 I participated in a residency-program. The art director wanted to do a studio visit. I did not have a studio. I worked alongside my newborn at the kitchen table and on our bed. So I invited him at our home. He rejected.”
Due to break the taboo on Artist Mothers, Melanie Maria wrote a manifest and printed them out. She glued them on promotional columns and created a performative monument. A revolution. An intervention. A reading.
